Lymphedema Therapy

Lymphedema Therapy relieves the symptoms of Lymphedema and swelling with gentle massage, compression, and exercise. Treatments are performed by a certified therapist, and the patient is taught what to do at home to control the swelling.

Massage (also called Manual Lymph Drainage) is done with a light touch to prevent damage to the delicate lymph capillaries. Fluid is massaged toward lymph nodes in other areas of the body and into collateral lymph vessels. Massage uses the superficial capillaries to move the fluid since the deeper nodes and vessels are damaged.

If you are at risk to develop Lymphedema you can act to prevent it.

  • Wear gloves while gardening and cooking
  • Clean the limb regularly and apply lotion
  • Shave with an electric razor
  • Avoid deep massage, strenuous exercise, injections and blood pressure reading or surgery to the affected limb
